Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to have umpiring experience in order to join the CSOA-LA?

No. You only need a desire to work and a willingness to learn. CSOA-LA training is designed to provide you with a working knowledge of the rules and umpire mechanics so that you can begin your development as a Softball umpire.

How do I join the CSOA-LA?

You will need to complete the Application Form and the Unit Contract and submit dues.

How much does it cost to join?

CSOA-LA membership dues are $75 annually. You will also need liability Insurance which is available with membership in organizations sucha as A.S.A. or N.A.S.O.

What about equipment and uniforms?

Each umpire is responsible for supplying his/her own equipment and uniform. At the minimum, this should include a mask, chest protector, shinguards, shoes, heather gray pants that can fit over the shinguards when working games on the plate, uniform shirt, fitted cap, ball bag, indicator, and a plate brush. Uniform and equipment packages are available from various vendors. The cost of a complete package can run from a couple of hundred to well over five hundred dollars, depending on the amount and quality of equipment and uniforms you purchase.

I have several years experience, Will that experience count?

The CSOA-LA assigns games based primarily upon performance and not necessarily on years of service (seniority). New umpires will generally start out officiating Junior Varsity level games and advance to higher levels based upon their performance. If you have prior experience at higher levels (college, etc.) or are transferring from another organization, the board may approve a schedule of higher level games based upon that experience. Your experience may have some bearing on your assignments, but it largely depends on your performance as an umpire.
